A hazard operability study (HAZOP) is an examination and evaluation of a project, preferably at the design stage. Its main objective is to identify hazards associated with the design and how they could impact on safety and the operation of the project. To design out the hazards and improve the operability of the completed project.

Although most effective if applied at the design stage it can also be used on an existing and established operation to identify hazards, there potential impact on safety and operational processes.
